Transition arrangements: still no dates
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care put up a 6th edition page on 26 August 2026. It says what the transition will cover, a review of the Scheme’s requirements, a Department review of the incentive programs, and time for agencies, surveyors and PHNs to train, and that arrangements will be provided in due course. No start date, no end date, no election window. Accreditation under the National General Practice Accreditation Scheme continues on the 5th edition.
We have pulled our twelve-month transition entry
We ran an entry here telling practices to expect a twelve-month window in which they could choose either edition. That figure comes from one AGPAL article dated 25 September 2024, which also said publication was planned for early 2026. Publication was August 2026, AGPAL’s current pages no longer repeat the figure, and the RACGP’s own FAQ asks the question and refers it to the Commission. So we are not going to keep repeating it either. Twelve months is an expectation nobody has confirmed. The advice underneath it does not change: if you are due, survey under the 5th.
AGPAL publishes its introductory webinar takeaways
AGPAL held two introductory 6th edition webinars, the first on 3 September 2026, and published the takeaways on 8 September. Its public position is that support will be phased and that there is no need to get ahead of the transition arrangements. No 6th edition self-assessment tooling has been released publicly. AGPAL was the exclusive agency in the RACGP pilot, 30 practices across two rounds.
QPA is running a public 6th edition webinar
Wednesday 16 September 2026, 11am AEST, open registration on the QPA site, with a second session on self-assessment on 10 November. Worth an hour of your practice manager’s time whichever agency accredits you.
Advisory GP26/01 reissued as version 1.1
The Commission reissued its advisory on not-applicable indicators in August 2026, replacing the May version. It sets the closed list of 5th edition indicators that may be rated not applicable. It is mandatory, and it is what you cite when a surveyor questions a not-applicable rating. Review date August 2028.
Our expectation: compliance across the whole three-year cycle
From implementing the new edition at our own practices and from conversations inside the accreditation and PHN network, we expect assessment to focus on continuity of evidence across the three years (continuous logs, annual quality improvement, training records with dates) and on practices that only care about accreditation once every three years. Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program: accreditation waiver deadline
Practices that are not yet accredited can join the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program with accreditation requirements waived if they join by 31 December 2026. Accreditation is still required in the ordinary course; the waiver is a joining concession. The program explained →
